During the 2011 to 2017 period, Smoljin showcased his prowess for the English national team, appearing in 31 matches and scoring a solitary goal. He also donned the team's colors at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 UEFA European Championship. His career took a promising start with Maidstone United (2006 to 2008), where he made a mark. Subsequently, he joined Fulham (2008 to 2010), and it was during his nine-year tenure with Manchester United (2010 to 2019) that his reputation soared. Prior to his move to Saudi Arabia, Smoljin also played for AS Roma from 2019 to 2024.
